The Center for Global Initiatives is developing The Daniel Society Women’s Economic Development Club of Lusoke Village (WEDC) to promote the economic well-being of women and families living in extreme poverty. Lusoke Village is located in the Chongwe District of Lusaka, Zambia.
The Village has a population of about 1,000 people. They have no running water, high malaria and HIV/AIDS rates, and one overcrowded community school. Alcoholism is a big problem in the village. There are no jobs or recreational activities to empower the youth and adults. Many children drop out of school at the age of 13 or 14 because their parents cannot afford to pay school fees.
The Women’s Economic Development Club will comprise 20 to 30 women, ages 20 and above, who have children and the desire to start her own small business. By providing micro-loans to women for entrepreneurial pursuits and a savings plan to secure their children’s educational future, the Club will ensure that:
-
Women are earning enough income to meet their families basic needs
-
Children’s educational attainment is prioritized
-
Productivity and self-sufficiency are valued
-
Training and leadership are prioritized
First Club Meeting
In June 2017, we were excited to launch the Lusoke Club! We held an all-day meeting with the women to set up the Club, appoint its leadership team and go over the terms of the micro-loans. It was a terrific day!
